Meaning of Pledge
Saying the Pledge of Allegiance in each classroom on Friday wasn’t really enough (Oct. 11). Once in a while I used to ask students to write the pledge. That is not for the faint of heart.
One student wrote, “ . . . one nation, under God and a vegetable, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” Another tried “invisible.” Another struck out with, “I pledge a league to the United States. . . . “ Most of the words, even if correct, were not spelled in a conventional manner. I suggest teaching the meaning of the pledge. A rote recitation is as meaningless as a “wrote” one.
