Teen Punished Unjustly

I write with sympathy, as a gay man in his 20s, for the student who was ejected from gym class (“Lesbian Teen Sues District for Bias,” Dec. 18). She is at an age where she is only being introduced to her sexuality and how different it is from the norm that is present in her family and community. This is difficult and stressful at her age. And to be treated with humiliation on the part of school officials for a situation in which she made a good-faith effort to be honest about her sexuality to a fellow student is not right. I hope school departments across California and the U.S. learn from this episode and demonstrate more sensitivity to their gay students.
