7,300 Pigs Slaughtered in Foot-and-Mouth Cull

From Times Wire Reports

South Korea was slaughtering 7,300 pigs after detecting foot-and-mouth disease at four farms south of Seoul--a finding that sparked fears that the ailment could spread further despite efforts to halt an outbreak discovered last week.

The Agriculture Ministry said several ailing pigs were found at the farms in Ansung and Yongin, both 60 miles south of the capital and about a mile from two farms where authorities slaughtered nearly 12,000 pigs a week ago.

Two-thirds of South Korea’s 106 livestock markets have closed.
