Some memorable moments in World Series Game 5 history:

1905 -- Christy Mathewson shut out the Philadelphia Athletics, 2-0, to give the New York Giants the Series in five games. All were shutouts, with Mathewson getting three, Joe McGinnity one, and Chief Bender of Philadelphia one.

1956 -- Don Larsen of the New York Yankees pitched the only perfect game in Series history, striking out pinch-hitter Dale Mitchell to end the game and give New York a 3-2 lead over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1969 -- The New York Mets won their fourth consecutive game from the Baltimore Orioles, 5-3, behind Jerry Koosman and took the Series in five games.

1973 -- The Mets’ Jerry Koosman and Tug McGraw combined to pitch a three-hitter against the Oakland A’s and take a 3-2 lead in the Series.

1981 -- Steve Yeager and Pedro Guerrero hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to lead the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Yankees and a 3-2 lead in the Series. Ron Cey was beaned by Goose Gossage.

1984 -- Kirk Gibson hit two home runs to give Detroit an 8-4 victory and the Series in five games over the San Diego Padres.

1987 -- The St. Louis Cardinals won their third consecutive home game to take a 3-2 lead in the Series with a 4-2 victory against the Minnesota Twins.

1988 -- Orel Hershiser pitched a four-hitter and Mickey Hatcher and Mike Davis hit two-run homers to give the Dodgers a 5-2 victory over the Oakland A’s and the Series title. Hershiser became only the third player to win the MVP in the playoffs and the World Series.
