Obasanjo Wins Presidential Nomination

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo won the ruling party’s presidential primary, easily beating three challengers.
His victory puts him in a strong position to win a second term in this year’s voting, although mounting violence since he came to power in 1999 and disillusionment among the poor have created considerable popular opposition.
Analysts said Obasanjo, a Christian from the southwest, won because the convention was stacked with his supporters and because his deputy, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, a Muslim northerner and power broker, backed him.
