Democracy in Action

Re “Group Fights Davis Recall,” May 28: Perhaps I misunderstood my teacher when I took civics in high school, but something just does not make sense to me. The Times stated that Dan Terry, “a Davis ally who is president of California Professional Firefighters,” reportedly said in regard to the estimated $25-million minimum cost for a special election, “I’m doing it for the money that will be spent for this insanity. This isn’t about [Gov.] Gray Davis. This is about democracy versus anarchy.” Hmmm. I always assumed that a recall election was democracy in action. Stupid me.
