Disease Fears Keep Birds Off the Market

The state’s second-largest bird expo was missing a key component Sunday -- birds. California wildlife officials banned birds from the 28th semiannual Bird Mart because of fears of spreading exotic Newcastle disease.
The disease, which is highly infectious to fowl but doesn’t affect humans, has led officials to destroy nearly 3.5 million birds at a cost of about $97 million.
