An 11-year project ends

Matthew Barney’s “Cremaster Cycle” includes five films made out of sequence over 11 years. The latest, “Cremaster 3,” which has its West Coast premiere May 16, is the longest and most elaborate of the works.
“Cremaster 1” (1995): A musical revue featuring two Goodyear blimps over the blue Astroturf of Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho, where Barney played quarterback for his high school team. Running time: 46 minutes.
“Cremaster 2” (1999): A gothic western that weaves together the life stories of executed murderer Gary Gilmore and mystic magician Harry Houdini (played by Norman Mailer, who wrote “The Executioner’s Song” about Gilmore). Running time: 79 minutes.
“Cremaster 3” (2002): Gaelic myth, Masonic rites and New York’s Chrysler Building. Running time: 182 minutes.
“Cremaster 4” (1994): Set on Britain’s Isle of Man, this installment involves a motorcycle race, a satyr, fairies, a pier and tap dancing. Running time: 43 minutes.
“Cremaster 5” (1997): An opera set in Budapest, with Ursula Andress in the role of a queen. Running time: 54 minutes.
