Wood-Burning Rule Goes Into Effect Today

The Central Valley’s much-debated wood-burning rule takes effect today, giving local air officials the authority to stop residents from burning wood on polluted days.
Officials say the measure has been widely misunderstood, and have ordered up a $290,000 public education campaign that includes billboards, television ads and a Hmong-language hot line.
Air officials said the rule doesn’t apply to area residents who rely solely on wood for heating, to those who live more than 3,000 feet up in the mountains, or to homes that don’t have access to natural gas.
