Wowed by Welk

The story by Richard Cromelin, “Groove Remixers Spiked the Champagne” (Aug. 8), recalled an interview I once had with a man considered by many to be the laughing stock of the music industry.

In the 25 years I was a newspaper reporter and writer in the public relations offices of Hollywood, I probably interviewed 500 figures in show business and other endeavors.

I was not happy when assigned to interview Lawrence Welk because I was a card-carrying member of the hipster set. We spent two hours together -- more time than I had given any other subject. I was amazed at Mr. Welk’s grasp of the world -- and not just where music was concerned. It may be hard for some cynics to believe, but I was sorry when told my time was up with Welk because I was listening to an interesting man and actually enjoying my work.
