A small plane crashed into the roof of an auto body shop in Fort Lauderdale shortly after takeoff, killing two people and critically injuring another, authorities said.
Television images showed the wing of the Piper Cherokee sticking out of the roof of the building near the City of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It was not immediately known whether anyone on the ground was hurt.
Police identified one of the victims as pilot Paul A. Butler, who turned 65 on Wednesday. A passenger, Stephanie Schambon, 20, also was killed.
A second passenger, Todd Butler, 21, was in critical condition at a local hospital.
