The San Clemente boys’ volleyball team began a busy week and gained momentum for Saturday’s Goleta Dos Pueblos tournament by defeating Irvine Woodbridge for the Division I title of the Orange County Championships on Monday at Huntington Beach Edison.
The sixth-ranked Tritons (14-2), who play host to Laguna Beach tonight, got a combined 14 kills from brothers Corey and Curtis Yoder in the 23-25, 25-20, 15-8 victory over No. 7 Woodbridge (10-3).
Curtis Yoder was selected most valuable player. The Tritons, who won the title last year, ran off eight consecutive points in the third game to end a 3-3 tie and take control of the match.
Irvine beat Irvine Northwood, 25-17, 23-25, 15-13, in the Division II final.

Swimming
Seven swimmers from Newhall Hart and Saugus, who originally were suspended for two meets because they competed for club teams in the USA Swimming Sectional Championships on March 11-14 in violation of Southern Section rules, will be able to compete this week after officials decided they did not violate any rules.
Athletes can only compete for club teams during the high school season if they give section officials a letter of authenticity from the event and have approval from their schools. But three USA Swimming meets, including the sectionals, are exempt.
“We regret that it happened, but it wasn’t based on anything other than the information that we had at that time,” said Rob Wigod, section assistant commissioner in charge of swimming.
Until Monday’s reversal, the swimmers -- three boys from Hart and two boys and two girls from Saugus -- had missed a meet last week and were scheduled to miss their teams’ Foothill League openers Wednesday.
