Johnson and Diamondbacks Stop Giants, Bonds

From Associated Press

Randy Johnson finally was rewarded for a standout performance, thanks to Doug DeVore’s two-run homer, and the Arizona Diamondbacks ended a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night at Phoenix.

Barry Bonds -- who remained two shy of 700 home runs -- was hit by a 95-mph fastball from Johnson in the fourth inning, then singled and scored on Yorvit Torrealba’s seventh-inning single for a 1-0 lead.

Bonds also tied the season record for walks he set two years ago with 198 when Mike Koplove put him on intentionally leading off the eighth. Bonds has 103 intentional walks this season, already a record.

San Francisco (77-65) is tied with Houston in the wild-card race, one percentage point behind the Chicago Cubs. The Giants had won eight in a row over the Diamondbacks.

Arizona went ahead in the seventh. Danny Bautista singled, stole second and DeVore, after falling behind 0-2 in the count against Jim Brower (7-7), hit his second homer of the season, an opposite-field drive to left-center.

Johnson (13-13) was 0-3 in his previous four starts despite a 2.43 earned-run average. He yielded one run and four hits in seven innings to earn his 100th victory with the Diamondbacks. He struck out eight.

Florida 7-2, Chicago 0-11 -- Moises Alou and Aramis Ramirez hit back-to-back homers, and the Cubs routed the Marlins in the second game of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field.

Carl Pavano (17-5) pitched a seven-hitter in the opener to win his fifth consecutive start. His 17th win matched the franchise record held by Kevin Brown and Alex Fernandez.

After getting blanked for the second consecutive game in a sloppy opener that had the fans booing -- the Cubs committed three errors and let a fly ball drop -- Chicago got a season-high 18 hits in the second game.

The Astros, who had won 12 in a row before losing the opener of Thursday’s doubleheader, have lost two of three for the first time since Aug. 20-22 against the Cubs.

San Diego 10, Colorado 4 -- Rookie Khalil Greene and Ryan Klesko hit three-run homers at Coors Field. Brian Lawrence (14-12) kept the Padres close and Greene provided the big blow in the seventh inning, helping them move to within 1 1/2 games of the wild-card lead.

Atlanta 4, Montreal 3 -- Johnny Estrada hit a three-run homer and the Braves ended a three-game losing streak. The Braves avoided their longest losing streak of the season, despite being out-hit, 13-6, and extended their East Division lead to 7 1/2 games over Florida.
