Anaheim Man Dies After Plunge From Pier

A man who jumped or fell from the Newport Beach pier was identified by authorities Saturday as Gheorghe Oncu, 48, of Anaheim.
Oncu was found face-down in the ocean about 2 p.m. Friday, said Larry Esslinger, supervising deputy coroner for Orange County. After lifeguards pulled Oncu from the water, he was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he died early Saturday. An investigation into whether Oncu jumped or fell into the water is ongoing.
