Take a bow

I read with interest Chris Pasles’ excellent article on the “dilemma of accompanists” [“Not Taking It Sitting Down,” Jan. 9] but was disappointed that the great John Wustman was not mentioned. During summer 1960, I attended a choral workshop headed by Roger Wagner and his associate at the time, Paul Salamunovich. John was the accompanist for the chorus and taught a class on the art song.
Among the great vocalists, John had accompanied Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and William Warfield. He added interest to his lectures with an occasional anecdote involving these and other artists. It is difficult to believe that 45 years have passed since that time, but the memories are still vivid and I hope that John is still playing.
