Pinochet’s Immunity Lost, Charges Dropped

From Times Wire Reports

A Chilean appeals court stripped former dictator Augusto Pinochet of immunity in a tax-fraud case but threw out nine kidnapping charges and a murder charge against him.

The court in Santiago, the capital, voted to remove the immunity that Pinochet, 89, has as former president, in a case tied to multimillion-dollar bank accounts.

The court cited Pinochet’s health in throwing out the case involving kidnapping and murder charges, an argument made in a previous case against him. Doctors say Pinochet has diabetes, a cardiac pacemaker and mild dementia.
