Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald will costar in a 2007 Los Angeles Opera production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,” LuPone has told the website Playbill.
LuPone said that Tim Robbins would direct the production and that James Conlon, who will take over as the company’s music director next season, would conduct. An L.A. Opera spokesman declined to confirm the report.
In 1989, Music Center Opera, the forerunner of L.A. Opera, presented “Mahagonny” -- which debuted in Leipzig, Germany, in 1930 -- in a staging by Jonathan Miller.
