Nissan Motor Co. said it might put diesel engines in U.S. pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles to cut emissions and improve fuel efficiency for the most popular class of vehicles in North America.
“You’ll probably see large diesel pickups and SUVs,” Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn told reporters in Tokyo. “We are preparing it.”
Tokyo-based Nissan is following General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group in powering fuel-guzzling trucks with diesel, which emits less carbon dioxide than gasoline. Diesel vehicles accounted for 3.4% of U.S. sales of passenger vehicles last year, according to research firm R.L. Polk & Co.
