25% of Married Women Beaten, Study Finds

Syria released a high-profile study reporting that one in four married women is beaten, usually by her husband or father.
The study was released by the state-run General Union of Women and funded by the U.N. Development Fund for Women.
Campaigners said it broke new ground simply by drawing attention to the issue.
Violence against women in Syria tends to be a family affair. More than 70% of abusers are husbands, fathers or brothers, and married women are most likely to be hit, the study found.
