The Sri Lankan government offered private helicopters to transport Tamil Tiger commanders to an internal meeting considered a crucial prelude to peace talks next week in Geneva.
The decision came after rebel mines killed six people, among at least 50 people killed this week in a surge in violence ahead of peace talks, scheduled in Geneva for April 24 and 25.
A mine killed four soldiers in the northern town of Vavuniya, and two suspected rebels died when a mine they were transporting apparently exploded, police said.
