A 46-year-old Los Angeles man drowned Tuesday while swimming in the Pacific Ocean about 25 yards off Manhattan Beach, police said.
A retired lifeguard saw the man struggling in the waves about 3:20 p.m. and jumped into the ocean to rescue him, Manhattan Beach Police Lt. Tony DiGenova said.
Lifeguards and surfers carried the man ashore near 45th Street. Paramedics with the Manhattan Beach Fire Department administered CPR, but the swimmer was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
His name was withheld until his family could be notified.
