The focus should be on the children

Re “Schools learning a lesson over vacation,” Dec. 29
I had a strong reaction to this article. So did a lot of working parents I spoke to. I even thought of providing statistics about California’s international and national ranking. What I want to know is, who has three weeks of vacation a year, plus summer break, school holidays and sick days? Can’t the state fund child care during winter break with the money saved for the majority of us who cannot miss work for three weeks?
Yes, the world is changing, and schools need to adjust to those changes. But shouldn’t our schools’ focus be on our children, providing them with the education to ensure their future in a global competitive world? Or is the state telling us it’s more important to save money at the expense of our future?
