The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday decided against naming downtown’s landmark Felix the Cat sign a historical cultural monument.
The sign at Figueroa and Jefferson has marked an auto dealership for decades.
The city’s Cultural Heritage Commission voted this summer to give the sign and the auto showroom monument designation.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilwoman Jan Perry opposed the designation on grounds it could hinder redevelopment of the site.
