Got a caffeine craving? Have a citrus soda
- Share via
Citrus-flavored sodas often have a higher caffeine content than the most popular colas, a study published in the Journal of Food Science found.
The study by Auburn University food researchers Leonard Bell and Ken-Hong Chou measured caffeine content in 12-ounce sodas that ranged from 4.9 milligrams for a store brand of cola to 74 milligrams in Coca-Cola Co.’s Vault Zero, a citrus drink. By comparison, a 12-ounce cup of coffee has 56 to 288 milligrams of caffeine and the same amount of tea has 30 to 135 milligrams, the American Beverage Assn. said.
Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, and Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo Inc. said they were phasing in labels that include caffeine content.
