* at Tampa Bay 7, New York 6 (10 innings): Despite Alex Rodriguez’s grand slam, the Yankees failed to clinch a playoff berth when Dioner Navarro homered in the 10th inning. The Yankees lead Detroit by 4 1/2 games in the wild-card race, and their magic number to guarantee a playoff berth stayed at one.
* at Detroit 8, Minnesota 0: Magglio Ordonez homered and doubled, Yorman Bazardo (2-1) threw seven scoreless innings and the Tigers kept their slim playoff hopes alive.
* Kansas City 9, at Chicago 5: Light-hitting Tony Pena homered and tied a career-high with four hits as the Royals scored eight unanswered runs on the way to victory.
* Toronto 11, at Baltimore 4: Frank Thomas went four for four, including his 513th home run, and drove in three runs and A.J. Burnett (10-7) improved to 5-0 in six starts against the Orioles.
* at Boston 7, Oakland 3: Winning pitcher Curt Schilling’s six strikeouts gave him 3,116, one behind Bob Gibson, who is 13th in major league history.
* Cleveland 4, at Seattle 3 (12 innings): Kenny Lofton knocked in Asdrubal Cabrera with a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning after the Indians blew a 3-1 ninth-inning lead.
* at Texas 3, Angels 1: Hank Blalock singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to help the last-place Rangers move one game away from Oakland for third in the AL West.
