Judge reinstates defamation suit

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge Thursday reinstated a defamation lawsuit filed by a prominent South Korean fertility scientist against a Riverside doctor who has been critical of his work.
In November, Judge James R. Dunn threw out the suit by Dr. Kwang-Yul Cha against Dr. Bruce Flamm, citing a state law intended to stop lawsuits of questionable merit that could limit discourse on matters of public interest. Dunn reversed the decision after Cha’s lawyers filed a motion citing new evidence and other arguments.
Cha, who has been president of hospitals and research labs in Los Angeles and South Korea, accused Flamm of conducting a “bitter personal vendetta” against him after Cha published a 2001 study suggesting that prayer might help women become pregnant.
