CCF art fellowships announced

For its 20th round of fellowships to Los Angeles County visual artists, the California Community Foundation is awarding $280,000 in one-year fellowships to 15 emerging and mid-career artists in painting, photography, collage, drawing, sculpture and multimedia.

“L.A. is sort of considered the creative capital of the world, and yet we cannot sustain creativity,” foundation President and Chief Executive Antonia Hernandez said this week. “Providing these scholarships and fellowships is a way to tell them that their art is important.”

In honor of its 20th year of partnering with the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, the Brody Arts Fund, the Joan Palevsky Endowment for the Future of Los Angeles and other groups, the foundation also plans to present a retrospective of the work of the various artists who have received fellowship funds during the program’s history. The show, titled “20 Years Ago Today, Supporting the Individual Artists In L.A.,” will be presented Oct. 4 through Jan. 11, 2009, at the Japanese American National Museum.

Receiving mid-career artists’ grants of $20,000 are Judie Bamber, Linda Stark, Mary K. Weatherford and Takako Yamaguchi for painting; Dave Hullfish Bailey, Hirokazu Kosaka and Steven Roden (multimedia/interdisciplinary); Alan deSouza and Charlie White (photography); Tam Van Tran (drawing); and Richard Hawkins (collage).

This year’s emerging artists fellows, who will each receive $15,000, are Dan Bayles for painting, Carlee Fernandez for sculpture, and multimedia/interdisciplinary artists Julie Lequin and Shana Lutker.
