Re “Insulting stereotype, or harmless holiday feast?,” Nov. 25
I was really taken aback that the Claremont School District agreed to drop costumes from a kindergarten Thanksgiving party. Political correctness today is an oxymoron. When politics are involved, being correct always takes a back seat to looking good.
A UC Riverside professor and Claremont parent stated, “There is nothing to be served by dressing up as a racist stereotype.” Truly, does she believe this? Sometimes children dressing up as Pilgrims and Indians are just children having fun -- and maybe getting a taste of what it felt like to be an Indian or a Pilgrim.
Have we gone so far that Jan. 1 will no longer be a new year because it discriminates against all the other days of the year?
