The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:
hristopher A. Bartkiewicz, 25, of Dunfermline, Ill.; private first class, Army. Bartkiewicz was killed Tuesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire while on foot patrol in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.
Jamel A. Bryant, 22, of Belleville, Ill.; private first class, Army. Bryant died Sept. 27 in Baghdad of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident while on patrol in Wahida, Iraq. He was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.
Richard G. Cliff Jr., 29, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; captain, Army. Cliff was among three Green Berets killed Monday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Yakhchal in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
Christopher T. Fox, 21, of Memphis; specialist, Army. Fox was killed Monday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Adhamiya, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.
William E. Hasenflu, 38, of Bradenton, Fla.; sergeant, Army. Hasenflu was killed Sept. 28 when an Afghan policeman opened fire on U.S. troops at a police station in the Jaji district of Paktia province, south of Kabul. Hasenflu was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
Michael J. Medders, 25, of Avon Lake, Ohio; captain, Army. Medders was killed Sept. 24 by a suicide bomber who detonated an explosives vest when the soldier’s unit attempted to detain a group of suspected insurgents in Jisr Naft, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. Medders was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Ronald Phillips Jr., 33, of Conway, S.C.; staff sergeant, Army. Phillips was killed Sept. 25 when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Bahbahani, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.
Gary J. Vasquez, 33, of Round Lake, Ill.; sergeant first class, Army. Vasquez was among three Green Berets killed Monday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Yakhchal in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
