Where’s the compassion?

Re “Eviction ends in tragedy,” Oct. 15
Faced with eviction from the home her family had lived in for three generations, Wanda Dunn set fire to her house and apparently took her own life. She no longer owned the house but was renting it from the person who purchased it and who defaulted on the mortgage.
Why are banks evicting tenants at all? Banks make lousy homeowners. In the neighborhoods of my town, the number of shuttered, graffiti-covered homes with dying landscapes continues to grow.
It makes more sense to keep the paying renters in houses while banks try to sell them. Greed robbed financial institutions of their corporate ethics, but corporations are run by people -- and I expect people to possess some measure of compassion.
