Sheriff Bill Kolender said he will resign July 2, midway through his fourth term, to spend time with his wife, Lois, who is in declining health.
Kolender, who turns 74 next month, has been a major figure in San Diego and California law enforcement circles for three decades. He was San Diego police chief from 1975 to 1988 and then served as director of the California Youth Authority under Gov. Pete Wilson. He was elected sheriff in 1994 and easily reelected three times. Undersheriff Bill Gore is set to become acting sheriff.
