HITS AND MISSES

Hit: Ryo Ishikawa, the 17-year-old Japanese phenomenon playing in the last group of the day, chipped from 37 yards in the darkness on the ninth hole, spun it back and drained the ensuing five-footer for a scrambling par and a 71. He didn’t make the cut, but his style and excellent manner make him irresistible to watch.
Miss: When a 27-foot eagle putt went barreling in on No. 1, Phil Mickelson stood at 10 under par and appeared primed for a possible runaway. When his drive on No. 2 strayed so far left it bounced off the driving range fence, well, not so much.
