Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. is considering whether to appoint a prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration’s interrogation practices.
A Justice Department official told the Associated Press that Holder planned to make a final decision within the next few weeks. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on a pending matter.
A move to appoint a prosecutor is certain to stir partisan bickering that could create a distraction to President Obama’s efforts to push for healthcare and energy changes. Obama has expressed reluctance to having an investigation, saying that the nation should be “looking forward and not backwards” when it comes to alleged Bush-era abuses.
