CALIFORNIA BRIEFING

A husband and wife from northern San Diego County who went on the “Dr. Phil” television show last year to boast about their career as serial shoplifters have been indicted by a federal grand jury in San Diego.
Matthew Allen Eaton, 34, and Laura Reese Eaton, 26, of San Marcos are charged with taking stolen property across state lines in an indictment unsealed Monday. Much of the merchandise was later sold over the Internet, prosecutors say. Authorities allegedly found 500 boxes of stolen goods, mostly toys, when they raided the Eatons’ home.
On the “Dr. Phil” show, the couple boasted of making more than $100,000 a year during a seven-year shoplifting spree in which they traveled to other states to steal goods. Often they took their children with them into the stores.
