Vancouver, Canada — In an upset, Shani Davis, the reigning world champion and world-record holder in the men’s 1,500-meter long-track speedskating, won the silver medal, not the gold, in that event at the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Saturday. The gold medal went to Mark Tuitert of the Netherlands with a time of 1:45.57.
Davis finished with a time of 1:46.10. He set the world record in December in Salt Lake City with a time of 1:41.04.
It is the first time an American has won medals in consecutive Olympics in the men’s 1,500 meters. Havard Bokko of Norway took the bronze in 1:46.13.
Chad Hedrick of the U.S. finished sixth with a time of 1:46.69. Hedrick won the only World Cup 1,500-meter race of the 2009-10 season that Davis did not.
