B-12 is important for nerve function. Too little can result in numbness, tingling, pain, memory troubles or depression.
Deficiency of the vitamin can turn up among vegetarians and vegans; plants don’t produce B-12. It’s also been seen among people who take certain heartburn medications or who have had weight-loss surgery.
