Retired MLB star Fred McGriff prices Florida mansion at $6.9 million

Retired professional baseball player Fred McGriff has listed his mansion-estate in Tampa, Fla., for sale at $6.9 million.

The residence, built in Georgian style in 1994, sits on nearly 2 acres within the Avila neighborhood, an exclusive golf course community with guard-gated security and 8-foot walls encircling the perimeter.

The 11,768-square-foot home sits off a circular motor court with a fountain and is entered through a two-story foyer with a sweeping wrought iron staircase. Detailed columns, arched doorways and elaborate molding and mantels are among the interior details.

Features include a wood-paneled study, a billiards room, a gourmet kitchen designed to overlook the family room. The master suite sports lighted domes, his and hers walk-in closets and a steam shower. In all, the home counts five bedrooms and six full bathrooms.

Outdoors, a pool and spa center on fairway views of the Jack Nicklaus-designed course. A cabana with an outdoor kitchen and wet bar complete the resort-like setting.

McGriff, 50, played for six different teams over the course of 18 seasons, making five All-Star teams and winning a World Series title with the Braves in 1995. He retired in 2005 tied with Lou Gehrig with 493 home runs for his career.

Earlier this year, McGriff sold a condominium unit at the Utopia building in Clearwater, Fla., for $825,000. He paid $904,000 for the 2,355-square-foot property in 2005.
