On-the-go Placido Domingo has a busy month of May, and June too

Plácido Domingo has two simultaneous engagements in Los Angeles in May and early June, conducting productions of Puccini’s “Tosca” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the new “Dulce Rosa” at the Broad Stage. But his demanding schedule isn’t preventing the tenor from jetting to China and Italy in between performances of the two operas.
The 72-year-old Domingo is scheduled to sing in “Nabucco” in Beijing on Wednesday and Friday as part of the annual NCPA Opera Festival. He is then expected to return to L.A. in order to conduct “Dulce Rosa” on Saturday and “Tosca” on Sunday.
Domingo is also scheduled to perform June 1 in Verona alongside Andrea Bocelli and José Carreras in an arena concert. Domingo won’t conduct “Tosca” the following day in L.A.; Jordi Bernàcer will lead the June 2 performance at the Dorothy Chandler in his place.

The tenor is also scheduled to perform June 7 in a concert of zarzuela and Latin American music at the Dorothy Chandler. Conductor Grant Gershon will fill in for Domingo for the June 6 performance of “Dulce Rosa.”
It’s not unusual for Domingo to juggle multiple engagements in different parts of the world. The frequent flyer often travels by private jet, though he sometimes takes commercial flights, according to his spokeswoman.
Domingo is the general director of L.A. Opera. This summer, he will conduct Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” in Vienna in June and will reprise his role as Pablo Neruda in “Il Postino” in Madrid in July.
