Vladimir Feltsman withdraws from Orange County recital

Russian-born pianist Vladimir Feltsman has withdrawn from a scheduled performance in Orange County on Sunday, citing health reasons. The recital had been scheduled to take place at the Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo on Sunday at 3 p.m.
A spokesman for the Soka Performing Arts Center said that the center will work with the pianist’s management to reschedule his recital later in the season, provided his health improves. Tickets will be honored for the rescheduled performance date or can be exchanged for seats at future performances.
The center said that refunds are generally not available except in extenuating circumstances.

Sunday’s recital was to have included solo piano pieces by Haydn, Schubert and Liszt.
The pianist has also had to cancel a performance scheduled for Friday evening in Eureka, Calif. His manager didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Feltsman made news in 1979 when the Soviet government declared him an “unperson” after he expressed a desire to emigrate, and he was banned from performing in public in the Soviet Union.
He moved to the United States in 1987 -- he was welcomed as a Cold War hero -- and eventually became an American citizen. He has returned a number of times to Russia to perform and conduct.
