World Series coverage, ‘Sunday Night Football’ win Sports Emmys

Fox’s broadcast of last year’s World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” were among the big winners at the 35th Sports Emmy Awards handed out Tuesday.
The ceremony, hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York, honored winners in 39 categories. The awards were chosen by a blue ribbon panel of industry press, and recognized outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast during the 2013 calendar year.
The coverage by Fox of the 109th World Series was named as outstanding live sports special. “Sunday Night Football” was crowned outstanding live sports series, while Fox’s broadcast of the American League Championship Series between the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers won the award for outstanding playoff coverage.
NBA TV’s “The Doctor,” about basketball legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving, won for outstanding sports documentary, while ESPN’s “30 for 30” won for outstanding sports documentary series.
“Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” won for outstanding sports news anthology. ESPN’s football “College Gameday” and TNT’s “Inside the NBA” tied for outstanding weekly studio show. “Inside the NBA: Playoffs” won for outstanding daily studio show.
Media mogul Ted Turner received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
