Report: Mekhi Phifer of ‘ER,’ ‘Divergent’ files for bankruptcy

Mekhi Phifer has reportedly filed for bankruptcy.

The “ER” alum is said to have filed last month and has amassed about $1.3 million in debt, TMZ reported Wednesday.

The “8 Mile” star claimed that he had about $67,000 in assets and is burdened by $1.2 million in back taxes, $50,000 in lawyer bills and $4,500 in unpaid child support, the site said, citing court documents.

Phifer, 39, has two sons, Omikaye, 15, and Mekhi, 6. Omikaye is from his first marriage to actress Malinda Williams, while Mekhi is from his relationship with Oni Souratha.

In April 2013, he wed Reshelet Barnes at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The filing reportedly indicates that Phifer spends about $11,600 monthly while bringing in only about $7,500 per month.

The filing comes as a bit of a surprise, given his recurring role in Showtime’s “House of Lies” and involvement in the widely successful film “Divergent,” which opened with a respectable $56 million at the box office when it hit theaters in March.

The film, an adaptation of Veronica Roth’s young adult trilogy, has already earned upward of $250 million worldwide and will get a sequel, in which Phifer is slated to reprise his role as Max.

The actor has also appeared in the TV series “Lie to Me” and “Torchwood.”
