The first weekend after Thanksgiving is typically a slow one at the box office, with people often choosing holiday shopping and parties over moviegoing.
But a broad mix of films in the marketplace is drawing larger-than-expected crowds, with the newly opened Christmas horror comedy “Krampus” attracting young audiences, and strong holdovers “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part II,” “The Good Dinosaur” and “Creed” all continuing to perform.
“Krampus,” a PG-13 offering from Legendary/Universal, collected $6.1 million at the box office Friday, putting it on track for a $15-million weekend, higher than industry observers has estimated.
Now in its third week of release, “Mockingjay -- Part 2” grossed $5.7-million Friday, putting the finale of the Lionsgate franchise on track for an $18.8-million weekend.
Disney/Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” collected $3.4 million Friday in its second weekend in theaters, with the family film on track to pull in $15.1 million.
“Creed,” the MGM/New Line/Warner Bros update of the Rocky franchise grossed $4.6 million Friday, with a likely weekend take of $14.6 million.
Among specialty films, Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq,” the first title from Amazon’s original films division, pulled in $435,000 Friday in 305 theaters, putting it on pace to collect $1.2 million by the end of the weekend.
