Kory Nielsen had nine carries for 97 yards, including touchdown runs of 29, five and six yards for Capistrano Valley Christian at Sage Hill. Quarterback Jeremy Ward was five of five passing for 64 yards one touchdown and Kelly Ryan added 10 solo tackles and six assisted tackles for the Eagles (5-3-1, 3-0).

Alex Westmoore completed 12 of 19 passes for 220 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown off a screen pass to Jess Lima, to lead host L.A. Baptist (7-2, 2-0). Lima also scored on a one-yard run. The Knights’ Allen Walker had six receptions for 96 yards.

L.A. Baptist’s Clarke Kress gained 58 yards in five carries, scoring on a five-yard run, and Matt Barbani had 32 yards and one touchdown in five carries. Defensively, Nate Flynn had a 50-yard fumble return for a score.

The Knights will face Sun Valley Village Christian (7-2, 2-0) for the Alpha League title in the annual Bible Bowl game Friday night at Granada Hills Kennedy High.

Ramiro Chavez gained 171 yards in 29 carries, scoring on runs of 19 yards, one and two yards for Saddleback (4-5, 3-2) at the Santa Ana Bowl. Guillermo Garcia rushed for just 25 yards in eight carries, but scored on runs of 10 and four yards for the Roadrunners. Albert Partida scored on a 35-yard run and finished with 117 yards in 12 carries for Santa Ana (4-5, 1-4), but the Saints committed six turnovers. Kyle Smith scored Santa Ana’s other score, a 26-yard touchdown reception.

Santa Ana junior quarterback Felix Munoz, who underwent surgery to relieve swelling in his brain after he collapsed on the sideline during the first quarter of the Saints’ 34-7 loss to Westminster last month, attended his first game since then.Munoz, wearing a Santa Ana football jersey, received an enthusiastic welcome as he walked to midfield for the coin toss before Saturday’s game, then joined his teammates on the sidelines as a spectator.

According to Santa Ana Coach Jesse Gomez, Munoz is currently being home-schooled and will not play again this season, but he appears to be making a strong recovery.

“He looks great. He’s walking, talking, doing everything,” Gomez said. “The fact that he’s healing as well as he is is just a testament to the kind of kid he is. He’s just a fighter and rises to any challenge. Everybody was overjoyed to see him.”

Junior Alex Gober, who has replaced Munoz in the Saints’ lineup, completed nine of 21 passes for 146 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions against Saddleback. He is 69 of 143 passing for the season, with nine touchdowns and six interceptions.

A near capacity crowd filled Santa Ana Stadium on Saturday night, expecting to get a glimpse of the tight Serra League race.

Instead, the 9,000 or so spectators witnessed two teams heading in opposite directions.

Santa Ana Mater Dei forced five turnovers by Anaheim Servite and quarterback Jason Forcier rushed for 133 yards and two long touchdowns to lead the Monarchs to a 35-7 victory.

Forcier said the one-sided victory was the result of an energetic week of practice.

``Our coach said it’s the most intense we’ve ever been,’’ he said.

With its fifth victory in the last six games, Mater Dei (5-4, 3-1) moved into a tie for first in league play with Los Angeles Loyola. The Monarchs, who lost to Loyola in double overtime two weeks ago, will close the regular season Thursday against Santa Margarita at Saddleback College.

Servite (6-3, 1-3) has not won a game since quarterback Mike Lawrence broke his thumb during a league-opening victory against Loyola, ending his season.

Servite sophomore running back Ken Ashley was also slowed by a ankle injury suffered last week in a loss to Santa Margarita. Ashley was limited to six yards in three carries. Servite wide receiver Shamus Flynn, who was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury, would not blame injuries for the team’s downward spiral, however.

``Turnovers have messed us up,’’ he said.

Andrew Simmons led the way on defense for the Monarchs, owning one of Mater Dei’s four interceptions, one of four sacks and recovering the only fumble in the game.

“It was my first time playing in the snow. It was incredible,” he said.

With only 1:41 left to play and trailing, 21-20, Troy Coach John Turek decided to have his team go for the two-point conversion. Ron Blanco took the ball around the right corner and into the end zone to give the host Warriors an upset of previously undefeated Fullerton (8-1, 3-1).

The victory gave Turek, who is retiring at the end of the season, the most career victories in Freeway League history at 149. It also gave Troy (7-2, 3-1) a share of the league lead.

“I’m numb,” Turek said. “I’ve never been this excited. With that little time [left], we had to go for it.”

Fullerton, ranked No. 23 by The Times, took a 21-14 lead with 2:50 left to play on a nine-play drive capped by an eight-yard touchdown run by Brian Allen.

Troy then took four plays to drive 59 yards, the bulk of them coming on a 43-yard reception for a touchdown by tight end Zack Myers on a pass from Evan Webber.

Joey LaRocque rushed for 63 yards in 16 carries and scored a touchdown as the host Chargers clinched a playoff spot with the Marmonte League victory.

LaRocque, who had three receptions for 51 yards, scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 4:25 left in the third quarter to give Agoura (8-1, 5-1) its final margin of victory. The run capped a six-play, 29-yard drive following an interception by Josh Silverman.

Agoura, ranked No. 8 Southern Section Division IV, took a 7-0 lead when Braden Lepisto caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Walker with 6:17 to play in the second quarter.

Walker completed 10 of 19 passes for 142 yards and rushed for 35 yards in 14 carries.

Cody Holland of Moorpark completed 14 of 24 passes for 191 yards, but he threw two interceptions in the second half. Moorpark (7-2, 5-1), ranked No. 5 in Division IV, had averaged 45 points in its first five league games. But Agoura held the Musketeers to 254 yards offense, including only 11 in the third quarter.

Los Altos (9-0, 3-0) held Charter Oak (6-3, 1-2) to 174 yards, seven first downs and forced four turnovers at Los Altos High in what is believed to be the most lopsided victory by either team in their storied rivalry.

Randall Brown rushed 14 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns and Tau Alo caught four passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns to lead Los Altos, which scored twice in the last four minutes of the second half to take a 21-0 halftime lead.

It was the third shutout this season for Los Altos, which has allowed only 80 points this season. The Conquerors, ranked NO. 9 by The Times, will play at Hacienda Heights Wilson on Friday for the Miramonte League title.

Lakewood High came so close Friday night and still the Lancers must wait another year for a shot at beating Long Beach Poly in a football game.

Wide receiver Desean Jackson of Poly made sure of that, slipping behind Lancer defensive back Da’milyn Tanner for a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cruz Parsons with 1:45 left to be played to pull out a come-from-behind victory at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

It was the 48th consecutive Moore League victory for Poly, ranked No. 4 by The Times and puts the Jackrabbits (7-2, 5-0) a game up on the Lancers (7-2, 4-1) in the league race with one game remaining.

Lakewood, which has not defeated Poly since 1982, had the high-powered Jackrabbits off-balance all night and might have pulled this one out if it had not lost two costly fumbles deep inside Poly territory. The first came early in the second quarter at the Poly 20-yard line and with Lakewood trailing 7-0, but marching.

The second came on just the third play into the second half at the Jackrabbits’ 33 yard line after a 42-yard run by Lakewood quarterback Justin Wheeler began a three-play drive.

Lakewood also had a first down just outside the Poly 10-yard line with 33 seconds left in the second quarter, but could not score, thanks in part to a costly delay of game penalty on third down that followed two failed passing attempts by Wheeler.

Still, Lakewood’s defense kept it in the game. The Lancers sacked Parsons seven times and held Poly’s ground attack to 26 net yards. A 38-yard field goal by Mark Magana as the second quarter ended cut Poly’s lead to 7-3 and then a one-yard run by Eliah Webb capped a four-play 12-yard drive for a 10-7 Lakewood lead. The drive was setup when linebacker Brock Malinoski forced Parsons to fumble deep in Poly territory and Lancer defensive back Marein McDuff recovered.

Poly’s five-play, winning drive started at the Lancer 48, with Parsons tossing five passes. Lakewood Coach Michael Christensen said that Tanner was in man-to-man coverage when Parsons lofted a pass over his head to Jackson, for what proved to be Jackson’s second touchdown reception of the night.

“I guess they thought we were going to throw the wheel route,” Jackson said. “I was open and I just had to catch that ball. I thought it would be a close game.”Christensen said it was a tough loss.

“This was the best defensive performance,” he said. “We had this Moore League title in our sight.”

Parsons completed 14 of 20 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson caught nine passes for 123 yards and two scores.

Needing a victory to seize control of the Serra League race, Los Angeles Loyola did nothing more than turn in its finest performance against its chief rival.

The Cubs (6-3, 3-1 in league play), ranked No. 16 in the Southland by The Times, manhandled No. 14 Santa Margarita (7-2, 2-2) on its way to a 21-7 victory at Saddleback College. Santa Ana Mater Dei is the only other rival with one league loss. The Monarchs (4-4, 2-1) play tonight against Anaheim Servite (6-2, 1-2) and next week against Santa Margarita.

Loyola sacked Santa Margarita quarterback Michael Angelo six times and held the Eagles to 151 yards -- 76 rushing and 75 passing. Of that, 105 came on two plays.

“I think we played great team defense,” said George Hypolite, who rushed 11 times for 61 yards and helped pressure Angelo from his defensive tackle position. “We had a league championship sitting right here ... we had to grasp it.”

They clinched it with both hands and squeezed. The only lapse that hurt the Cubs was Chris Ramsey’s 67-yard scoring run in the first quarter to tie the score, 7-7.

Loyola had plenty of offense as quarterback Scott Deke scored on runs of eight and two yards and Trason Bragg added a two-yard touchdown. Bragg rushed 21 times for 117 yards as the Cubs rushed for 217 yards and out-gained the Eagles 351-151 yards.”We’re a gritty bunch of guys, but we played soft,” Eagle Coach Mike Jacot said. “They pushed us around. That was disappointing.”

Kevin Slaughter had 132 yards rushing on 23 carries and one score for host Murrieta Valley (4-5, 2-2).

No one dared to pencil in Huntington Beach Edison as a Southern Section Division I title contender before the season, but the Chargers can no longer be overlooked after their 22-8 thumping of neighborhood rival Fountain Valley Friday night before a crowd of close to 10,000 at Edison Field.

Matt White, the son of Edison Coach Dave White, made two interceptions, caught a 33-yard touchdown pass and was part of a defense that recorded nine tackles for losses against a team that only two weeks ago beat the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Los Alamitos.

By winning the critical Sunset League game, Edison (6-3, 3-1), ranked No. 22 by The Times, created a three-way tie for first place with No. 12 Fountain Valley (6-3, 3-1) and Los Alamitos (8-1, 3-1).

The Chargers keep raising their level of play, particularly on defense. Despite having only three senior starters and no huge linemen, Edison has limited opponents to one or zero touchdowns in seven of its nine games.

“Sometimes during games, I sit and watch them because I enjoy them so much,” Dave White said of his overachieving Chargers. “They’re so disciplined. I’m so proud of these kids.”

Sophomore quarterback Brian Shrock completed eight of nine passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Fountain Valley’s offense was stuck in reverse most of the night. Edison led 16-0 at halftime. Quarterback Chris Debowski was intercepted three times in the second quarter and was saved from a fourth interception by an official’s call. Fountain Valley was outgained, 123-16, in the first half.

White was so effective playing receiver and cornerback that he forced Fountain Valley to commit pass interference penalties on offense and defense in a futile attempt to neutralize him.

Meanwhile, inside linebacker Nate Mitani of Edison was having the time of his life playing at Edison Field. An outstanding outfielder for the Chargers’ baseball team, Mitani was disrupting the Barons’ offense with his aggressive tackling.Asked about the Chargers’ defensive success, Mitani said, “It’s all heart. We’ve got more heart than anyone.”

As for Matt White, his younger brother, Hunter, a freshman running back, was on the sideline serving as a manager and admiring every moment of his brother’s success.”Whenever you watch your big brother do something, it’s awesome,” he said. “He’s my hero.”

Ojai Nordhoff 35, Westlake Village Oaks Christian 28
Junior running back Will Strong gained 157 yards in 23 carries in the second half, scoring the Rangers’ last three touchdowns, as Nordhoff rallied to clinch the Tri-Valley League title over visiting Oaks Christian.

Previously unbeaten Oaks Christian (8-1, 4-1) led, 28-13, before Strong scored on runs of three, 16 and 54 yards in the last 11:19. His efforts helped Nordhoff (8-1, 6-0) secure its first league title since 2000.

Strong, who suffered a strained left knee in the Rangers’ last game, was limited to just eight yards in three carries in the first half and Oaks Christian led, 21-13, at intermission, following the Lions’ comeback of their own from an early 13-0 deficit.

Oaks Christian rallied behind senior quarterback Joey Halzle and freshman running back Marc Tyler. Halzle completed 15 of 26 passes for 218 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown pass to Mark Richardson. Halzle completed 11 consecutive passes in one stretch.

Tyler, the son of former Rams star Wendell Tyler, had just four carries for 13 yards but scored on runs of five and three yards.

Oaks Christian’s leading rusher, Aaron Ware, had 967 yards and 14 touchdowns entering the game but was limited to 64 yards in 14 carries.

Nordhoff closed out its league season with the victory and will play Arroyo Valley in a nonleague game next week. Oaks Christian finishes with a league game against Oak Park.

There were plenty of reasons for Shane Martin to be nervous Wednesday night.

Martin, a senior kicker for Norco, was not only called upon to complete the upset against Corona Centennial, but it was also the first time he had been asked to kick a field goal all season.

Martin didn’t flinch, connecting on a 21-yarder with three second left to play to lift Norco to a victory over Centennial, ranked No. 10 in the Southland by The Times.

“It was just like an extra point,” Martin said. “It was no big deal.”

The victory moved the Cougars into first place in the Mountain View League and ended Centennial’s 19-game league winning streak.

“They just kept coming back and coming back,” Norco Coach Gary Campbell said.

The Cougars (7-1 overall, 3-0 in league) rallied back from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter to take a 21-14 lead on three consecutive touchdown runs by sophomore Toby Gerhart, who finished with 324 yards in 37 carries.

Centennial (5-3, 2-1) cut its deficit to 21-20 by halftime, then moved ahead, 28-21, on a 53-yard touchdown reception by Dashan Miller followed by a two-point conversion run by Terrell Jackson.

Jackson, the Southland’s leading rusher, was held to 71 yards in 15 carries.

He was stopped short on fourth down at the Norco three-yard line with 9:13 left in the game, and the Cougars took advantage, marching 91 yards and tying the score at 28-28 on a five-yard run by sophomore quarterback Kirk Philbrook with 4:33 left.
