BOYS

Senior Mehdi Taieb-Brahim of Birmingham confirmed his status as the top runner in the City with his performance, but no team established itself as a clear-cut favorite for the section championships Nov. 22. Taieb-Brahim, third in the City championships last year, ran 15:26 over the 2.9-mile course to win the first of two qualifying heats. Sophomore Gabriel Guzman of Monroe posted the second-fastest boys’ time when he won the second heat in 15:52 to lead the Vikings to a 39-52 victory over Belmont. Garfield totaled 51 points to win the first heat, followed by Birmingham with 52 and defending champion San Pedro with 58.

GIRLS

Birmingham and two-time defending champion San Pedro posted dominating victories in their respective heats to set up a showdown in the City championships Nov. 22. Birmingham, paced by the 1-2-3 finish of sophomore Jennifer Hernandez, senior Marina Santana and sophomore Emmaline Hartel, won the first of two heats with a 22-83 victory over second-place Garfield. Hernandez, who had a best of 20:14 at Pierce two weeks ago, ran 18:35 over the 2.9-mile course. Santana clocked 18:42 and Hartel ran 18:43. San Pedro swept the first four places in the second heat while recording a 17-69 victory over Los Angeles. Sophomore Kirsten Adams placed first in 18:33 for San Pedro, with twin Megan second in 18:44 and freshman teammate Lauryn Maes third in 19:22.
