Reporting from San Diego — San Diego police shot and killed a man who they say attacked officers with a machete during a domestic-violence call Sunday night.
The “agitated” 21-year-old man, whose name was not released, had already slashed a police dog with the machete, authorities said.
Officers had gone to an apartment in the City Heights area after receiving a report of a man threatening to kill his family members with a knife and stick, according to Lt. Manuel Del Toro.
Once police arrived, the man grabbed a machete and efforts to subdue him with a Taser were unsuccessful. When he swung the machete at one of the officers, two officers opened fire, police said.
The man was declared dead at the scene.
The K-9 dog suffered a gash on its back and was taken to a veterinarian for emergency treatment. The dog is expected to survive.
The two officers were described as five- and six-year veterans of the police department.
