Residents evacuated from East L.A. block after gas leak

Residents are being evacuated from an East Los Angeles block after work crews punctured a gas line, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
The gas line was punctured about 2:45 p.m. in the 300 block of South Gerhart Avenue. Residents along the street between West Pomona Boulevard and East Beverly Boulevard are being evacuated, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
[Updated at 6:01 p.m. PDT Oct. 14: About 60 homes and between 80 and 100 people are affected by the leak, the Sheriff’s Department said. Residents are being bused to Garfield High School.
The Gas Co. estimates repairs will be finished by about 8 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department.]
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was also on scene. Evacuees were being directed to Garfield High School at 5101 E 6th St.
