Santa Monica to celebrate opening of new oceanfront park today

Santa Monica will officially celebrate the opening of the city’s new $46.1-million oceanfront park on Saturday.
The celebration, which begins at 11 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m., will feature music, crafts, storytelling, food trucks and tours of the new Tongva Park, officials said. The park covers seven acres just west of Santa Monica City Hall, two blocks from the beach.
The park was designed by British-born James Corner and his New York firm Field Operations, best known for its work on the acclaimed High Line elevated park in Manhattan.
A smaller park right at the foot of City Hall is called Ken Genser Square, in honor of the city’s late mayor.
Tongva Park features a series of winding paths and modest hills thickly planted with a mixture of native and drought-tolerant plants. Other attractions include a playground, an event lawn, water fountains and viewing platforms overlooking the ocean and the Santa Monica Pier.
