Suspicious package briefly closes Union Square in San Francisco

A suspicious device found at Geary and Stockton streets that briefly shut down Union Square in San Francisco on Thursday was cleared and determined to be a false alarm, police said.
Authorities received a call from near Market and Powell Streets, a short walk away from the popular Bay Area city landmark, about 11:50 a.m. Police later said the package was found in the intersection at Geary and Stockton streets.
The entire area was shut down to traffic and pedestrians as the city’s municipal railway service skipped a stop at the square, according to police. Residents and businesses were also ordered to shelter in place, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The paper reported an officer spotted the package at the edge of Union Square. The area is close to wear participants in the upcoming Nike Women’s Marathon pick up their race packets.
Police cleared the scene shortly after 1:45 p.m.
