Readers React: How to get more people to vote

To the editor: Finally, our politicians identified the root of the problem in our civic crisis. (“Brown OKs bill to boost poll turnout,” Oct. 11) Silly me, I never realized that voters were facing daunting challenges in registering to vote. Now, this little democracy that we have left will be resuscitated and we will have maximum turnout in every election.
This crisis of civically engaging people will not be fixed by registering more people to vote. People are unable to connect their own self-interest with the political process. The last thing they want to do is to vote when they know their vote will not change a thing.
