Breakers take hold of Orange Coast League

Surviving a close match Monday at Mile Square Park Classic Golf Course in Fountain Valley has allowed the Laguna Beach High girls’ golf team to move a step closer to repeating as Orange Coast League champion.

Laguna remained undefeated in league play by rallying past the host Eagles, 219-227, on the par-36 course.

Topping the Breakers with a low score was BellaRose Robinson who shot even-par. Murphy Thompson was next with a score of 39, followed by Sarah Hollinshead (43), Haley Rovner (50), Hailey McCullough (51) and Hannah Burnett (54).

Laguna’s final player on the course was Hollinshead, and the freshman came up with her best round of the year (43) which gave the Breakers an eight-stroke lead and clinched the win.

Melissa Cruz of Calvary Chapel, which had built a 16-stroke lead after the first four player scores, was match medalist shooting a one-under par 35.

Laguna improved to 8-0 in league and 10-4 overall.

“It’s always tough to win on the road playing teams on their home course, but in the end, our team depth again proved to be too much for Calvary,” Laguna Assistant Coach Sean Quigley said.

Laguna took on Estancia Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The OCL individual finals are Monday at Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa, and Laguna hosts a league four-way cluster Wednesday at Ben Brown’s Golf Course.

Boys’ Water Polo

The Breakers picked up their third Orange Coast League victory and remained in first place (3-0) by defeating visiting Estancia, 22-6, Wednesday.

Jeff Rubino paced the Breakers’ scoring attack with seven goals. Jakob Colladay had three goals, five assists and five steals, and Camden Benson (two assists), Will Clark (two assists), Julian Bridy and Joe Laptin each scored twice. Liam Shapley had four assists, and goalie Gordon Pike nine saves, two assists and two steals.

“The guys got off to a great start and got things going in the first quarter,” said Laguna Coach Ethan Damato whose Breakers bolted to a 10-1 first-quarter lead. “We are showing signs of improvement every day.

Laguna, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, also played two nonleague matches within the past week.

On Saturday, the Breakers, ranked second this week in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll, hosted Aliso Niguel and pinned a 16-6 defeat on the Wolverines. Rubino led the scoring with seven goals, Colladay had three goals, three assists and three steals, and Pike five saves, three assists and six steals.

Aliso Niguel entered the game ranked sixth in the division, and this week are ranked eighth.

The Breakers also went to Dana Hills Oct. 8. They fell to the second-ranked team in Division 2, 13-10. Rubino, Bridy and Judge Washer each scored twice. Colladay scored once and had four assist and two steals, and Pike had six saves.

“Aliso was a big win as they are in our division,” Damato said. “Although we had a slow start, we really controlled the game and I thought played a great second half.

“Dana [Hills] is a good team and I was proud of some of the things we did in that game and the way our guys came out to play. If we limit our turnovers and convert on 6-on-5, we can play with anyone.”

The Breakers, 9-9 overall, host a pair of nonleague matches beginning Saturday with a noon game against Los Alamitos at the Laguna pool. They’ll also host Montebello, ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 3, at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Laguna defeated the Oilers, 12-8, in the Division 3 championship game last November.

“Los Al will be a great test for us as it’s a chance to play against a good team out of our division (Division 1) where we can work on putting a game plan together. Montebello will be a big game for us at home and one we have been looking forward to all season.”

Girls’ Volleyball

The Breakers completed a 5-0 run through the first round of Orange Coast League play Wednesday by winning again by a sweep, this time, at the expense of host Godinez, 25-14, 25-9, 25-19.

Senior middle blocker Cameron Dorn had 11 kills and five digs, senior outside hitter Katelyn Carballo seven kills and eight digs, junior defensive specialist Kendyl Brennan 10 digs, and senior setters Aspen Rocha and Taylor Cunningham had 12 and 11 assists, respectively.

The victory was the 95th consecutive in league play for the Breakers who are 13-10 overall and ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 2AA.

Laguna also scored a 25-14, 25-14, 25-9 league sweep Monday of host Calvary Chapel. Sophomore outside hitter Alexandra McKeown and Dorn had 10 and nine kills, respectively.

In league play Oct. 8, the Breakers took a 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 sweep from visiting Estancia. Senior outside hitter Sage Patchell had nine kills, McKeown 10 digs, and Rocha 23 assists.

Laguna improved to 49-0 all-time (best-of-five sets) against the Eagles.

The Breakers are back on the court for two road league matches next week, starting Tuesday at Costa Mesa which launches the second round of league play. They travel Thursday to Saddleback. Both matches begin at 5:30 p.m.

Girls’ Tennis

The Breakers turned to their bench and picked up a big Orange Coast League victory Tuesday by defeating host Godinez, 17-1.

The win put Laguna, ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 2, at 7-0 in league and 11-3 overall.

“It was a match in which our normal starters watched from the sidelines, and we still nearly swept,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said.”So, I was very proud of the girls.”

In a nonleague match Monday at Santa Margarita, Laguna fell to the Eagles, 15-3. Kelly Keller scored two points and Ashley Shelton one point in singles play.

The Breakers started the second round of league play Oct. 8 and defeated host Costa Mesa, 17-1, to complete a league sweep (2-0) ) of the Mustangs. In singles, No. 2 Summer Clawson (6-2, 6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 Kathleen Kimball (6-2, 6-3, 6-3) swept. The Breakers swept all nine points in doubles action.

Laguna took on Calvary Chapel in league play Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

On Monday, the Breakers play a 3:15 p.m. nonleague match against Sage Hill at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach. They also play 3 p.m. league matches at Estancia Tuesday and close out league match play Thursday at Saddleback.

Cross-Country

The boys’ and girls’ teams, both idle last week, compete Friday at the Rough Rider Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Boys’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers (3-1 league) defeated Corona del Mar, 5-1, Oct. 8 at the Grant Street Courts in Newport Beach.

In two-man team action, No. 1 Cole Paxson/Isaac Wulff (21-9, 22-20), No. 2 Pete Obradovich/Enzo Sadler (21-14, 21-15), No. 3 Ayrton Garcia/Drake Dvorak (21-15, 21-13), and No. 4 Liam Christiansen/George Knapp (21-10, 21-0) swept. Laguna’s four-man team of Paxson/Wulff/Obradovich/Sadler won, 25-20.

Laguna ended regular-season play Thursday against Huntington Beach. Results weren’t available at press time.

Surfing

The Breakers had a strong showing Wednesday against Newport Harbor, with the girls leading the charge and taking a victory.

The Girls’ Shortboard and Longboard team scored major points for Laguna and dominated the competition. In Shortboard, the Breakers swept Kayla Coscino getting the win. Claire Kelly placed second and Destiny Thompson was third. In Longboard, Lola Fisher earned her first win and Coscino was third.

In Boys’ Shortboard, Noah North opened with a second-place finish and Nate Madigan was third in their heat, and Travis Booth and Jake Levine placed second and third, respectively, in their heat. Jeremy Shutts won his heat, Spencer Davis was second in his heat, and Liam McCue used a late score to take third place.

The Breakers previously turned in big individual performances in a meet against Dana Hills at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Hills.

The Boys’ Shortboard heats competition started the event. Levine, in the final heat of the day, took first place to give the Breakers their top win. In the opening heat, Booth placed second. In another heat, Shutts took second, Madigan third and Dante Madrigal was fourth, and Trey Lockhart was impressive with a second-place finish in his heat.

In Girls’ Shortboard, Coscino was second. In Girls’ Longboard, Fisher was third.

The Breakers will challenge Newport Harbor again Tuesday at Thalia Street in Laguna Beach.
